Introduction

• The National Education Code (NEC) serves as a platform to provide a coding system that will enable accurate tracking, assessment and reporting of the education and training programmes as well as programme registrations in Malaysia. It will also further facilitate the statistical reporting at international level, as well as accelerate the process of data integration more effectively towards big data for the education sector to ensure data quality in meeting the needs of international standards.
• The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) as the leader for higher education in Malaysia that formulates policies on the development of National education, has established the National Education Code (NEC-2020) based on the ISCED Fields of Education and Training 2013 (ISCED-F 2013) produced by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
• The NEC-2020 is the latest revised edition and supersedes the previous NEC 2010 edition. This is in line with the latest changes to the code framework set by UNESCO and adopted as a reference in the international reporting standards
• MSIC aims to present this set of activity categories in such a way that entities can be classified according to the economic activity they carry out.
